The constituency period beckons, with MPs in the National Assembly due to depart on Friday and return to Parliament on 11 October 2022.
NCOP delegates have a two-week constituency period, which starts today. There is no opportunity to go through the motions as a fair amount of heavy-duty business will be done before the term ends.
Question Time, Legislation and debate are the main chamber business this week.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to answer oral questions on Thursday. Due to disruptions, he was unable to complete his questions during his previous appearance on 30 August 2022. Accordingly, the President will deal with the supplementary questions of Question No 11 by Mr V Zungula, which was the fifth question on the day, in addition to the new questions scheduled.
In addition, select Ministers in the Economics Cluster will be probed on a range of subjects during their Question Time Session on Wednesday.
The National Assembly has a big legislative load and will get a chance to reduce this when it considers six bills:
Tuesday: Economic Regulation of Transport Bill; National Road Traffic Amendment Bill; Drugs and Drug Trafficking Amendment Bill and Land Court Bill. Wednesday: Fundraising Amendment Bill and Expropriation Bill
Beyond this, there is a mini-plenary session scheduled on Tuesday to discuss the establishment of an ad hoc committee to investigate matters surrounding Phala Phala game farm theft as well as Thursday’s urgent debate of national importance on the negative impact of heavy-duty trucks on the safety of commuters on the roads and the recent loss of lives.
Elsewhere, nationwide public hearings on the National Veld and Forest Fires Amendment Bill continue in the Eastern Cape Province from Friday, 30 September until Sunday, 2 October 2022.
