The Sub-Committee on Communications deliberated on the short-listed names to send to Acting Communications Minister Jackson Mthembu for appointment to the MDDA Board.

The EFF suggested that Dikeledi Mushi be replaced with Amanda Cuba.

The DA suggested that Ahsraf Patel be replaced with Dikeledi Mushi.

In its recommendations, the Sub-Committee considered the ratio of male to female before it decided who would be removed from the ANC’s list.

The Sub-Committee agreed that the eight names recommended in order of priority are: 1) Keabetswe Modimoeng (the existing acting chairman), 2) Yolisa Kedama, 3) Zolani Kgosietsile Matthews, 4) Peter Zimri, 5) Luthando Mkutumela, 6) Charles Lewis, 7) Amanda Cuba and 8) Sandisiwe Ncemane.

Meeting report

Dr M Ndlozi (EFF) was satisfied with the eight names proposed by the ANC.

The Chairperson asked for input from other Members on this issue.

Ms P Van Damme (DA) said all candidates the DA recommended were also on the ANC’s list and she therefore had nothing further to say on Dr Ndlozi’s recommendation.

The Chairperson said since Amanda Cuba’s name did not appear on the list of the IFP, the ANC needed to respond to Dr Ndlozi’s recommendation.

Ms Van Damme said that Ashraf Patel was included in the DA and IFP’s list and that he appeared on three lists. She suggested that Ahsraf Patel be replaced with Dikeledi Mushi.

Mr L Molala (ANC) said the Committee should consider the ratio of male to female before it decided who would be removed from the ANC’s list.

The Chairperson said four black females have remained and currently five vacancies need to be filled.

Ms N Khubeka (ANC) asked for Ms Van Damme’s input on the EFF’s recommendation of Amanda Cuba. She agreed with Mr Molala and said the gender issue should be considered and a female should not be replaced with a male.

Dr Ndlozi proposed that the list should be adopted with Junior Khumalo, Dikeledi Mushi and Ashraf Patel removed.

Ms Z Majozi (IFP) seconded Dr Ndlozi’s recommendation.

The meeting was adjourned for a short comfort break.
