The Standing Committee on Community Safety, Cultural Affairs and Sport considered and adopted the Customary Initiation Bill. Final mandate: Customary Initiation Bill [B7-2018]

The Chairperson informed the Committee the purpose of the meeting was to consider and deliberate on the legislature’s final mandate on the Customary Initiation Bill. The Committee had, in previous meetings, supported the Bill with few amendments, but it had to make a final decision on whether it supported the Bill or note.
 
Ms L Botha (DA) proposed the Committee support the Bill.

Mr G Bosman (DA) seconded the proposition.

The Chairperson then thanked the Committee for reading and considering the final mandate during its constituency period. He said the Bill was aimed at regulating initiation practices that have resulted in the deaths of many initiates during the initiation season, and it was ensuring that hygienic practices were adhered to.

The Committee considered and adopted the Bill with no amendments.

Other Committee business

The Chairperson informed the Committee he was in discussion with the Chief Whip to finalise with the NCOP when it would be ready with the finalisation of the Customary Marriages Amendment Bill. Progress on the matter would be communicated to the Committee.

The Chairperson then thanked the Procedural Officer for ensuring the Committee engaged with the public on the Customary Initiation Bill during the Covid-19 period.

No resolutions were taken by the Committee.

The meeting was adjourned.
