Meeting Summary

Hansard NCOP 28 July 2020
Hansard NCOP 16 July 2020

The Select Committee on Petitions and Executive Undertakings convened to follow up on an undertaking made by the Small Business Development Ministry however the item was postponed, for the fourth time, as the Minister and Deputy Minister tendered apologies. The Committee was concerned about the rescheduling required in order for the oversight meeting to take place.

The Committee adopted progress reports of the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy and the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure.

Meeting report

The Committee had received an apology from the Minister of Small Business Development as she was outside the country attending government businesses. The Deputy Minister had also sent her apology because she had just received sad news about the passing of a family member. Due to the absence of both the Minister and the Deputy Minister, the Committee could not proceed with the first meeting agenda on Executive undertakings.

Since the Minister was not able to attend the meeting, the Chairperson agreed that the first agenda item needed to be rescheduled for the fourth time. Although the Committee accepted the apology, it still believed that it was absurd that the Committee needed to schedule with the Department so many times in order for the meeting to take place.

The Chairperson asked Members to comment on the report. She took Members through the recommendations.

Ms S Shaikh (ANC, Limpopo) remarked that the report was good. She commented on the practicality of the second recommendation. She was uncertain whether entities would be able to provide monthly reports to the Committee. She agreed that monthly updates should be submitted to claimants, but for the Committee she recommended those entities submit quarterly progress reports.

Ms N Nkosi (ANC, Mpumalanga) agreed with the suggestion.

The report was duly adopted.
