Meeting report

The Chairperson advised the Committee that the meeting would be short because she had to attend to another function at 5 ‘o'clock.

Mr A Van Der Westhuizen (ANC) recommended that the Committee discuss the quality of the candidates that were interviewed for the National Lotteries Board.

The Chairperson believed that all the candidates fared very well and were knowledgeable about the Lotteries Act. She argued that the Chairperson of the Board should possess legal expertise and should preferably be female.

Mr S Njikalana (ANC) stated that the Committee’s job was made easier by the fact that the process produced a high calibre of candidates. He noted that the candidates possessed a variety of skills and were articulate on a number of issues. He supported the Chairperson’s view that a female should be appointed as Chairperson of the Board.

Mr Radebe (ANC) concurred with Mr Njikalana about the skills of the candidates. He advised that in future, the Committee should make sure that candidates were able to express themselves in their mother tongue. Lastly, he mentioned that Charted Accountants fared very badly in the interviews, but their skills were required on the Board.

The meeting was adjourned.
