Election of Chairperson

Meeting report

The Committee Secretary welcomed Members to the virtual meeting and read out the agenda. The purpose of the meeting was to elect the Committee Chairperson. Rule 158 of the National Assembly Rules requires that before the Committee can be constituted, there is a need to elect the Chairperson.

The Secretary invited nominations from Members.

Ms G Tseke (ANC) nominated Mr M Mashego (ANC).

Ms N Sihlwayi (ANC) seconded the nomination.

The Committee Secretary confirmed there were no other nominations. She declared Mr Mashego the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation.

Chairperson remarks
The Chairperson thanked Members for the nomination and said that he looked forward to working with the Committee during the course of his term. He briefly touched on his previous position and said that he would be apolitical in conducting his duties as Chairperson of the Committee. He also acknowledged the presence of former Finance Minister, Mr T Mboweni (ANC).

Mr L Basson (DA) congratulated the new Chairperson and said that the DA was prepared to work with him in providing water and sanitation to the people of South Africa.

Mr A Tseki (ANC) congratulated the new Chairperson on behalf of the ANC. He said that the ANC is proud of the appointment because of the great record that Mr Mashego has and they look forward to seeing what he can do for the Committee.

Ms M Mohlala (EFF) said that the EFF does not do congratulations because once that is done it would be followed by disappointments. She said that the EFF hoped that they would not be mocked in the Committee, as was done in the previous portfolio, and they wish to be treated with respect and have constructive engagements in the Committee – then the Chairperson would be complimented on a good job.

The Chairperson thanked everyone for attending the meeting.
