Mr Speaker, I move without notice:
That the House -
1) notes with sadness the passing of Basil "Dolly" D'Oliveira, the former South African and English cricketer, who died at the age of 80 in England on Saturday, 19 November 2011;
2) further notes that D'Oliveira, who made his mark on the Cape Town club cricket scene, moved to England to pursue his international playing career after he was denied by the apartheid government from representing this country;
3) recalls that D'Oliveira, who scored 2 484 runs at an average of 40 and took 47 wickets in 44 tests, made his debut for his adopted country in 1966 at the ripe age of 34;
4) further recalls that D'Oliveira made headlines in 1968 when he was included in the England squad for the tour of South Africa which had to be called off as the South African government refused to accept his participation in the England team;
5) acknowledges that he will forever be remembered for his famous innings in which he scored 158 runs against Australia at The Oval in the 1968 Ashes series;
6) further acknowledges that amidst the circumstances surrounding his playing career D'Oliveira will be remembered for his humble nature, humanity and sincere sportsmanship;
7) recognises that his memory and legacy lives on in the modern game in the form of the trophy that bears his name, which is awarded to the winners of a test series between South Africa and England;
8) extends its condolences to his family during this time of grief; and
9) calls upon all South Africans to celebrate the life and legacy of a truly great South African.
Agreed to.
