Before entering the political arena, Mr Steyn was employed as a civil engineer and provided architectural consulting services. This led to the establishment of his own company of which he became the Managing Director and was also involved in project management in the oil industry. He was elected to Parliament in 2004 and was appointed as a representative of the DA in the Gauteng Legislature from 1999 to 2004.
