Mr Selfe's career in politics started in 1979, when he joined the research department of the Progressive Federal Party (PFP), a forerunner of today’s Democratic Alliance. He was elected to Parliament in 1994, and participated in the Constitutional Assembly which drew up the democratic Constitution, and served as Democratic Party and DA spokesperson on Correctional Services since 1999. served as the DA's Federal Executive Chairperson. He was born in Pretoria and attended Bishops Boarding School in Cape Town. Upon completing his secondary education he was called up for military training in the South African National Defense Force anti-aircraft division and progressed to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After his reelection to Parliament in 1999 he became the party’s spokesperson on Provincial and Local Government. In 2004 he was re-elected to Parliament and became responsible for the Correctional Services Portfolio. (http://www.da.org.za).
