About Mzwandile Masina

Mr Mzwandile Masina is the Mayor of Ekurhuleni. He grew up in a struggle family and joined the ANC Youth League when he was 14. He trained under Umkhonto we Sizwe soldiers when he was involved in a self defence unit in Katlehong, East Rand.

In 2012 he was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of the Gauteng Film Commission. Before that, he was Chief Operations Officer at the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation. He has worked for the Ntsika Enterprise Promotion Agency as Programme Manager responsible for Targeted Groups. He was also appointed Director: Business Development and Customer Services at the National Department of Trade & Industry(the DTI) before joining Uthingo Management as General Manager: Empowerment. He studied at the University of the Witwatersrand School for Public and Development Management as well as University of Pretoria where he graduated with a Masters Degree specializing in Entrepreneurship. He has attained numerous local short executive and development programmes where he gained knowledge and insight into various business management practices. He also served as the General Secretary of the South African Youth Development Programme (SAYDEP) where he was responsible for policy input during the formation of National Youth Commission. In 1999, he was named the Youth Leader of the year for his outstanding leadership role by the ABSA Foundation and Rand Afrikaans University, (now University of Johannesburg). In 2008, he was named the most innovative employee of the year by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, for creating and launching the highly successful “One company One Job” initiative. Mr Masina was the former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry
