About Sylvia Elizabeth Lucas

Sylvia Elizabeth Lucas, has an illustrious history of leadership in the Northern Cape, the ANC and the ANC Women’s league.

Born on 22 April 1964 and grew up in Upington in the Northern Cape. She attended the Carlton Van Heerden High School in Upington. Sylvia Lucas, is a tireless advocate for human rights, freedom and justice. She took part in the Rosedale rent boycotts and was part of the delegation to Transitional Council, to ensure the provision of prepaid electricity to communities when they could not afford conventional electricity power.

From 1995- 2000, Lucas served as a councillor for the Khara Hais Local Municipality in Upington. It is during this phase in our struggle that Lucas used her position as a councillor to seek to transform the state in order to serve the objectives of thoroughgoing change.

Lucas is a founding member of Radio Riverside community radio in Upington. Served as an Executive Trustee of the Northern Cape Educare Trust and a Trustee Member of the Ikemeleng Trust that served Free State and Northern Cape.

In 2000. Lucas was elected to serve in the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature, where she served on various Standing Committees of the Legislature. Ms Lucas was elected as Deputy General Secretary of Association of Public Accounts Committee in 2004 to 2006 and from 2006-2009 Lucas served as a General Secretary of Association of Public Accounts Committee

Sylvia Lucas, served as the first Female Chairperson of the ANC in the Siyanda Region from 2001 to 2004.

In 2004, she was elected on the Provincial Executive Committee of the ANC in the Northern Cape. Subsequently in 2007, Lucas was elected as Deputy Provincial Chairperson of the Women’s Leagues. In both the ANC and the ANC Women’s Leagues she served in the Provincial Working Committee.

In 2009, Lucas was appointed as the MEC for Environment and Nature Conservation in the Northern Cape.

When Hazel Jenkins subsequently resigned due to ill health with effect from 22 May 2013. Lucas was officially elected and sworn in as Premier of the Northern Cape on 23 May 2013.

Sylvia Lucas was re-appointed Premier on 20 May 2014, following South Africa 7 May 2014 General Elections.

From 2013 to 2017 Sylvia Lucas served as a Provincial Treasure of the African National Congress.

In 2017, Lucas was elected to serve in the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress.

Lucas left office as the Premier of the Northern Cape in May 2019 to become the Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces.
