The Week Ahead: It's a wrap for the Sixth Parliament

After a dizzying and tumultuous five years, Parliament will rise this week ahead of the 2024 National and Provincial elections.

Both Houses have scheduled plenary sittings on Thursday, where the main aim is to approve legislation.

In the National Assembly, lawmakers will consider five bills: the Municipal Demarcation Authority Bill, the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill, the Statistics Amendment Bill, the Pension Funds Amendment Bill, and the Public Procurement Bill. Beyond this, the agenda includes a resolution on the Political Party Funding Act, a Report on the Establishment of the Electoral Reform Consultation Panel and Ratification of the African Charter Protocol on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Older Persons in Africa.

Elsewhere, NCOP delegates will consider 6 bills: the Railway Safety Bill, the National Water Resources Infrastructure Bill, the Transport Appeal Tribunal Amendment Bill, the Marine Pollution Amendment Bill, the General Intelligence Laws Amendment Bill, and the Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill. In addition,

Both chambers will conclude their business with the traditional farewell speeches, where MPs reflect on their time in office and express well wishes to their colleagues.

Over in the Committee corridor, a handful of meetings are scheduled to finalise outstanding bills before they are considered during Thursday’s sittings.
