That the House -
1) notes that the week of 24 October to 30 October has been declared by the United Nations as Disarmament Week and that it is meant to highlight the danger of the arms race, and the need to end it;
2) further notes that much progress has been made towards abolishing nuclear weapons, as well as chemical weapons and land mines, the total elimination of all weapons of mass destruction has not yet been realised;
3) recognises that the South African Government has led by example in voluntarily dismantling its nuclear weapons programme and since then has adopted a strict policy of disarmament and non- proliferation with regard to weapons of mass destruction and the capabilities to produce these weapons;
4) further recognises the right of all states to develop research, production and use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without discrimination; and 5) calls on all countries to increase transparency and security of their weapons material holdings and to continue practical, systematic and progressive efforts to advance nuclear disarmament globally.
