Madam Deputy Chairperson, I move without notice:
That the Council -
1) notes that the Independent Electoral Commission, IEC, indicates that on the weekend of 8 and 9 November 2008 more than 3,6 million South Africans visited more than 19 000 registration stations across the country to either register for the first time, re- register or to inspect their details;
2) further notes that the IEC also reports that more than 1,6 million new voters registered to vote, which brings the total number of voters for the 2009 elections to almost 22 million;
3) takes this opportunity to congratulate all South Africans for heeding to the call to exercise their democratic right to choose their public representatives and to stand firm in fighting for the civil liberties that the forbears of our struggle for liberation fought and defended with their lives; and
4) calls on all the people of South Africa to guard against those who want to plunder and destroy what our forbears have built with their blood and lives and to never waver in their commitment to defend their freedom and liberation by continuing to visit IEC offices and register to vote because that is the right that people like Solomon Mahlangu, Cassius Make, Griffiths and Victoria Mxenge, Matthew Goniwe, Sparrow Mkhonto, Fort Calata, Sicelo Mhlauli, Moses Kotane, Moses Mabhida and many others never lived to see exercised.
Motion agreed to in accordance with section 65 of the Constitution.
