Hon Speaker, hon Deputy President, I move without notice: That the House - 1) notes that Saturday, 22 August 2009, marked the start of the holy month of Ramadan;
2) further notes that during the month, Muslims from all walks of life across the globe fast from sunrise to sunset and that such abstinence as that of Ramadan promotes spiritual growth, self- discipline, nurtures feelings for those who are starving and provides an opportunity for spiritual renewal;
3) believes that Muslims in this country have made significant contributions to the birth and sustenance of our democracy and that the holy month of Ramadan affords Muslims a unique opportunity to strengthen bonds of friendship and family ties amongst themselves and with their fellow South Africans; and
4) conveys its best wishes to all Muslims during this holy month of Ramadan.
Agreed to.
