Deputy Speaker, following on from the hon Singh, the DA believes that there is no place for military unions in the SANDF. The legitimate problems of serving members of the Defence Force must be resolved through its grievance system and within the chain of command of the SANDF.
Earlier this year, the president of the SA Security Forces Union, Bheki Mvovo, who is a serving officer in the Defence Force, called for the Chief of the SA Navy, Vice-Admiral Modimo, to be dismissed. Now we have members of the SA National Defence Union, Sandu, trashing the Union Buildings.
The violent clash between the police and military unions turned the Union Buildings into what looked like a war zone. Therefore, we welcome Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Lindiwe Sisulu's commitments to take swift and effective disciplinary action against members of Sandu.
However, the DA calls on the Minister to go further and review relevant defence legislation and regulations with a view, so far as possible, to limit the scope of military unions and that of the protest action of its members within the provisions of the Constitution. [Applause.]
