Madam Deputy Chair, I move without notice:
That the Council -
1) notes that a Leeu Gamka farmer, Piet Botes, was jailed for 35 years on 7 May 2010 and ordered to undergo a programme for sexual offenders while in prison for murdering his farmworker's 13-year- old daughter and indecently assaulting two teenage girls in 2006; and
2) acknowledges that this case sends a clear and unequivocal message to farmers who continue to treat women and girl-children as part of their properties that those days are over and all South Africans, regardless of their economic status, also have rights that are protected by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.
Motion agreed to in accordance with section 65 of the Constitution.
