Hon Speaker, I hereby move without notice:
That the House -
1) notes that the General Assembly of the United Nations Organisation recommended in 1954,Resolution 836(IX), that all countries institute a Universal Children's Day to be observed as a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children and of activity promoting the welfare of the world's children;
2) further notes that the recommendation was made that the day is observed on the date which each country considers appropriate; and that the date of 20 November marks the day on which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989;
3) recognises that the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the creation of Universal Children's Day reflects the growing recognition that children are important and valued members of society, now and in the future; and also that the Universal Children's Day celebrates children just for being themselves; and
4) supports the promotion of the rights of children everywhere around the world.
Agreed to.
