Hon House Chair, I move without notice:
That the House -
1) notes that in 1994 the United Nations General Assembly decided that the International Day of the World's Indigenous People shall be observed on 9 August every year during the International Decade of the World's Indigenous People;
2) further notes that the theme for this year is: "Indigenous designs: celebrating stories and cultures, crafting our own future";
3) recognises that in 2004 the UN General Assembly proclaimed a Second International Decade of the World's Indigenous People through Resolution 59/174 and that the goal of the second decade is to further the "strengthening of international co-operation for the solution of problems faced by indigenous people in such areas as culture, education, health, human rights, the environment and social and economic development, by means of action-oriented programmes and specific projects, increased technical assistance and relevant standard-setting activities";
4) further recognises concerns about the precarious economic and social situations that indigenous people continue to endure in many parts of the world in comparison to the overall population, and the persistence of grave violations of their human rights; and
5) supports all initiatives to promote and protect the rights and freedoms of indigenous people.
Agreed to.
