The North West provincial government, which is led by the ANC, is set to change the lives of homeless people in that province in its bid to increase access to secure, decent housing for all through government's newly adopted housing programme. It has set aside R23 million to help them get decent homes.
This housing development project is meant for informal settlement dwellers of Reagile Township, Redirile and Derby, outside Korster. It is expected to commence soon and 129 units will be built.
This initiative is in line with the assertion contained in the clause in the Freedom Charter that says "there shall be houses, security and comfort". The clause stipulates that -
Slums shall be demolished, and new suburbs built where all have transport, roads, lighting, playing fields, crches and social centres. Hi khensa mfumo wa North West loko wu vonile swi fanerile ku endlela vaaki va wona swo antswa. [We would like to thank the North West government, which has found it appropriate to do something better for its community.]
