Chairperson, I move without notice:
That the Council -
(1) notes that on Friday, 11 February 2011, the President of the Republic of South Africa, President Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma - uMsholozi, uNxamalala - handed houses to the people of District Six in Cape Town;
(2) further notes that the return of the houses is part of the government's commitment to ensure the return of the people of District Six who were forcibly removed when the apartheid government declared District Six a whites-only area under the Group Areas Act and relocated to the sandy and bleak Cape Flats township complex some 25 kilometres away and their old houses bulldozed; and
(3) takes this opportunity to congratulate the government for fulfilling its undertaking and showing its commitment to redress the legacy of the long years of apartheid in South Africa.
Motion agreed to in accordance with section 65 of the Constitution.
