Hon Chairperson, on behalf of the Democratic Alliance I hereby move the following motion without notice:
That the Council -
1) notes with grave concern the reservations about investing in the mining industry in South Africa that were expressed by some foreign mining houses at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town during the week ending 12 February 2011;
2) further notes that these reservations were based on the continuing debate within the ANC regarding the nationalisation of mines and, in addition, the President during his state of the nation address to Parliament failed to take the opportunity to clearly and unequivocally inform South Africa and foreign investors whether or not the government supported the call by the vocal fringe elements such as the leader of the ANC Youth League for mines to be nationalised;
3) notes the negative impact on the ability of the mining industry to create the desperately needed jobs which would appear to be the very good focus of the ANC government; and
4) therefore calls on the President to step up to the plate and to act decisively to inform the nation and foreign investors whether the ANC government is for or against the nationalisation of mines.
Is there any objection to the motion? There is an objection to the motion; therefore the motion will become a notice of motion.
