Chairperson, I hereby move without notice:
That the Council - 1) notes that 30 May to 3 June was designated as Child Protection Week, under the theme "Working together to protect our children", which highlights the collective responsibility of all members of our society to get involved in fighting child abuse, neglect and violence in our society;
2) further notes that over 56 500 children were reported to be victims of violent crime in 2009-10, ranging from sexual abuse to murder, and that close relatives, friends and acquaintances are overwhelmingly the perpetrators of sexual offences against children in South Africa and that 29% of all sexual offences against children involve children under 10 years of age; and
3) takes this opportunity to reiterate its commitment to speak against child abuse and violence in our society and calls on individuals to join the call to protect our children.
