Chairperson, I hereby move without notice: That the Council -
1) notes that the South African government received high praise at the official launch of the latest UNAids report in New York during the celebration of medical milestones and interventions in responding to the devastating effects of the scourge of HIV/Aids in societies across the globe;
2) further notes that UNAids expressed its profound appreciation for its role and contribution towards the understanding, treatment and prevention of HIV/Aids in South Africa and across the African continent;
3) acknowledges the profound work done by the Department of Health and the various committed nurses, doctors and volunteers across South Africa who put their shoulders to the wheel to ensure that we break the devastation caused by HIV/Aids in our country, resulting in a decline of 35% in new HIV and Aids infections over the last 10 years; and
4) takes this opportunity to congratulate our government on its achievements so far and wishes our Deputy President and all other delegates success in their deliberations during the forthcoming United Nations high-level government conference on HIV/Aids in New York.
Motion agreed to in accordance with section 65 of the Constitution.
Chairperson, thank you very much. Although not similarly worded, my motion also had to do with HIV/Aids and what South Africa does and has done about it. I therefore withdraw. Thank you very much.
