Hon Deputy Speaker, a new fire-making method has been launched in Ekurhuleni.
The ANC recognises that climate change is a new threat on a global scale and poses an enormous burden to South Africans and Africans as a whole, with great risk to the poor. Therefore, it welcomes the new fire-making method, launched during the winter Clean Fires Campaign, known as Basa Njengo Magogo, with its scientifically proven ability to reduce emissions by 80%. This was revealed in Ethwathwa on Thursday, 9 June 2011 by the Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, hon Mabudafhasi.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has made a commitment to taking this new fire-making method to all its communities to help prevent pollution of the environment and reduce the dangers associated with winter fires.
The ANC views the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as part of its responsibility to protect the environment and promote sustainable development. We are also encouraged by the fact that this method is being rolled out in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Free State, and should also be spread to other areas where coal is used. I thank you. [Applause.]
