Speaker, on behalf of the ANC study group on international relations and co-operation, I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the people of Japan on the recent horrific damage and loss of human life caused by the earthquake and tsunami.
We thank the South African rescue team for its selfless contribution, support and help to that nation in these difficult times. We will continue to pledge solidarity to that country and its people.
Our government, through the Department of International Relations and Co- operation, is committed to this humanitarian assistance. We encourage our people, families, the business sector, NGOs and the religious community to assist in whatever manner possible to alleviate the impact of the tragedy on the people of Japan.
In doing this, we are joining a broad range of other peoples and countries in expressing solidarity and support. The ANC calls upon all South Africans to come out and lend a helping hand to the people of Japan. I thank you.
The PAC did not make use of its slot or opportunity to make a statement. Does the ANC wish to take up this slot?
