I hereby move without notice on behalf of the ANC: That the Council -
1) notes the tragic and heartless killing of Warrant Officer Gershwin Matthee and Constable Cannon Cloete who were gunned down in cold blood while attending a routine complaint at an informal dwelling situated in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein in Cape Town, on Sunday, 22 May 2011;
2) further notes that the killing of the 39-year-old warrant officer and the 23-year-old student constable who were both shot in the head and robbed of their service pistols follows the tragic killing of Station Commander Captain Sidney Bongani Hlengwa and Constable Zamikhaya Patrick Hlangulela and the shooting of Sergeant Aaron Siyabonga Gcaleka during a raid at an illegal liquor outlet in Creighton in KwaZulu-Natal;
Chair, on a point of order: This exact same motion was moved yesterday by the commissioner.
Chair, if it was I will step down.
Hon members, I am advised that yesterday the motion was moved with notice, but today it is without notice and the content and context is also different, so you may proceed, hon Matila.
Thank you, Chair:
3) takes this opportunity to condemn in the harshest possible terms such heartless killings of police officers and conveys its profound condolences to the families of the police officers who lost their lives defending our people against merciless criminals who have no regard for human life and the law and wishes Sergeant Aaron Siyabonga Gcaleka a speedy recovery; and
4) calls on the people of Kraaifontein and Creighton to notify the police and ensure that the perpetrators of these cold-blooded murderers are brought to justice.
Motion agreed to in accordance with section 65 of the Constitution.
