Deputy Chairperson, I move without notice:
That the Council -
1) notes that an orphaned Grade 11 pupil from Manzana Village, outside Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, who lived in a Ford Laser after the one- bedroom mud house he had shared with his father crumbled in heavy rain and wind, is expected to move into his own fully furnished home that was built for him by local businesswoman Maria Mlangeni;
2) takes this opportunity to extend its gratitude to Maria Mlangeni for demonstrating our African spirit of ubuntu to care for our neighbours and assist those who are needy; and
3) calls on the business community to emulate the generosity of Maria Mlangeni by establishing a fund to support the pupil's educational needs and ensure that he too gets the chance and opportunity to continue with his studies in order to empower himself to break the cycle of generational poverty facing many of our people whose families and lives were made difficult and unbearable by the long years of discrimination, exploitation and marginalisation they endured under apartheid.
Motion agreed to in accordance with section 65 of the Constitution.
