On behalf of the DA, I hereby move the following motion without notice:
That the Council -
1) notes with grave concern the loss of some 1 400 jobs in Newcastle as a result of the closure of textile factories brought about by attachments made by the sector bargaining council; 2) further notes that this comes at a time when all South Africans are unanimous about the desperate need for the creation of new and substainable jobs;
3) also notes that many of the persons who have lost their jobs are the only persons in their families who have employment and that the loss of these jobs will result in great hardship and hunger for many thousands of dependants;
4) therefore calls on the bargaining council to cease the attachments of the affected textile company assets and to withdraw the attachments already served in order to allow these factories to restart their operations and restore employment; and
5) requests the Departments of Trade and Industry, Labour and Economic Development to intervene in order to ensure that a new and sustainable wage model for this part of the textile industry is negotiated and put in place.
There being an objection to the motion, the motion without notice becomes a notice of motion.
