Mr Speaker, South Africa's biggest trading partner, the eurozone, is in economic turmoil. This may have far-reaching implications for our economy. It is pleasing that the government is united on this crucial issue.
Cope is pleased about recent statements emanating from our Cabinet Ministers. The leaders of our nation, including the President and his Deputy, are sending out the correct warning signals. It would seem as though government has some idea of what to expect and what actions are to be taken in anticipation of a meltdown in the eurozone. [Interjections.]
Order, hon members! Order!
It is crucially important that the President and his Cabinet are unified in their resolve to keep us within our inflation targets in view of the latest consumer price index, or CPI, figures. International ratings agencies have already placed the country on a downgrade alert. We cannot afford to give them any more ammunition. Cope calls on the government to act and speak as a collective and to ensure that South Africa and all our people are optimally prepared in order to protect our economy against a possible eurozone collapse. I thank you, Mr Speaker.
