Chairperson, I would like to welcome the remarks on and messages of support for the Cuban programme. I also want to assure Parliament and the people of South Africa that working with the Cuban government resulted in us sending a target of 1 000 South African students to study in Cuba this year. All provinces, except the Western Cape, are participating in this programme. [Applause.]
We are working with the deans of all eight of the medical schools to ensure that the National Health Insurance System that we established in South Africa is also supported by an increase in health professionals - doctors in particular.
We want to work with the people of the Western Cape to look at how we can ensure that deserving students in this province also have an opportunity to be part of this team. We want to call on the Western Cape province to also work with disadvantaged communities to try and get students from the Western Cape to be part of this team.
