Hon Speaker, the prevention of road accidents still remains one of the biggest challenges that we as a nation face today. Our roads have become the modern-day killing fields of our young and old alike. Many lives are lost, and not a day goes by without a report of road carnage in some part of our land.
Millions, if not billions, of rands are spent on the Road Accident Fund and emergency services. Overspeeding, unroadworthy vehicles and poor road maintenance all add up to unnecessary accidents, and in many instances serious disability and death. Our traffic laws require far stricter enforcement if we are to create a culture of road obedience and safety.
Now is the time for this government to pay less attention to flamboyant, ineffective campaigns and instead urgently focus on ensuring that our traffic police are visible and that the laws of this country are properly enforced. This culture of lawlessness on our roads must come to an immediate end. I thank you.
