Hon Speaker, I would like to thank the hon member who raised the issues pertaining to road safety. I would like to remind the House that over the past two months more than 63 people have died on our roads in three major accidents in three different provinces.
With the Deputy Minister, we have visited families and the injured in hospital. However, the issue not only concerns about numbers. There are parents who lose their children, and there are children who lose the support of their parents. There are also people who are maimed and crippled for life. The issue of accidents has a greater impact than what we can see immediately.
Whilst we will ensure that there is greater visible traffic policing, it becomes important that we South Africans also change our habits on the road. We need to recultivate the spirit of tolerance and courtesy. There are too many instances of road rage on our roads. We have very low tolerance levels with regard to basic common courtesy. We need to address those issues.
There is also the issue of where most people ignoring simple traffic regulations. We cannot enforce and legislate everything. We also have to change ourselves to respect the rules of the road. People inconsiderably cross roads when robots are red. We have to begin with those small issues, respecting the rules of the road; and then we can also be stricter with regard to passenger safety, vehicle safety and all the other issues. All of us have to play some role. Thank you. [Time expired.]
