Speaker, the Congress of the People notes with great concern that since the ANC decided to render the Western Cape ungovernable the unrest has been having a domino effect across the country. The Arab Spring saga in Tunisia led to the toppling of Husain Mubarak's government in Egypt.
We acknowledge that the ANC government has failed to deliver on its promises to the country. The evidence of this failure can be seen daily as we traverse our country and on our television screens. We read about this failure in our newspapers every other day. The Congress of the People also acknowledges the right of South Africans to demonstrate when the government is failing to live up to its promises.
What we do not condone is the burning of infrastructure, which is paid for by the taxpayers and not by the ANC. We fiercely condemn the loss of life and destruction of property in the ANC-led protest in Khayelitsha. Every demonstration that is not peaceful is unconstitutional. In a democracy, hon Speaker, the only way in which people can effect change is via the ballot. No amount of burning and demonstration can change the government.
It is our responsibility, as members of this House, to condemn any unconstitutional, illegal and specifically violent activity. I thank you.
