House Chairperson, I move without notice:
That the House -
1) notes that the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March;
2) further notes that on that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid pass laws in Sharpeville, South Africa;
3) acknowledges the proclamation of the day in 1966, when the General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination; and
4) believes that the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination reminds us of our collective responsibility for promoting and protecting the ideal that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.
Agreed to.
