Hon Deputy Speaker, I move without notice:
That the House -
1) notes that Pope Shenouda III, leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt, passed away on 17 March 2012 at the age of 88 after a long illness;
2) further notes that he led the Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt for four decades, expanding the church's presence around the world and building bridges between Muslims and other Christian denominations;
3) recalls that Pope Shenouda worked tirelessly to protect the Christian minority in Egypt and was known as a charismatic and popular leader for Egypt's Copts;
4) acknowledges that he will be remembered as an intellectual, a poet and an advocate for tolerance and religious dialogue, and will also be renowned for his humanity and empathy with the Coptic community, as well as people of other faiths; and
5) extends its condolences to the Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt and South Africa and to his followers.
Agreed to.
