Hon Deputy Speaker, we certainly condemn any act of violence on any of our children, any of our learners, wherever they might be, whether it is Limpopo, the Western Cape or anywhere else. We want to create safe and caring environments for our learners to learn. It is rather unfortunate that these kinds of violations are utilised for political purposes. If I were to stand here and say the highest incidence of alcohol syndrome occurs in the Western Cape, nobody would be pleased. If I were to say that our children are afflicted by gangsterism and violence in the Western Cape schools, nobody would be pleased. If I were to say that the highest alcohol abuse and drug abuse take place in schools in the Western Cape, does that mean that there is a dereliction of duty on the part of the government, or is it our collective responsibility to ensure that each and every learner - irrespective of where they are located, whether it is in Limpopo or in the Western Cape - is our collective responsibility?
I do urge the hon leader of the largest minority party, not the majority party, the largest minority party - that is how the Constitution describes that particular party - to be very cautious about exploiting the sensitive issues of abuse for political purposes. Thank you very much, hon Deputy Speaker. [Applause.]
