Hon Speaker, water and sanitation in South Africa remain of grave concern to the IFP. We depend on rivers, dams and underground water for our water supply and yet the quality of our water has been declining over the recent years.
Our rivers and streams are becoming highly polluted and are toxic in many instances. Untreated sewage flows into tributaries. Garbage litters our river banks. Unethical corporates without any social responsibility pollute our waterways.
Many communities continue to live with sewage leaking onto their streets, while some municipalities make it impossible for them to have access to drinking water. The government must urgently address the state of litter and sewage leakages to make water drinkable, even for live stock.
In KwaZulu-Natal, for example, cattle were lost because they drank contaminated water. It is time that government stops claiming services are being delivered while they are actually only delivering promises.
