Hon Speaker, I heard Minister Xingwana saying the following on TV: "Young Afrikaner men are brought up in the Calvinist religion, believing that they own a woman, they own a child, they own everything and ..." ... listen carefully ... "... they can take that life because they own it." Therefore, according to the Minister, Afrikaners believe they may kill their wives and children.
The Minister's first defence was to say that she was quoted out of context. When that did not work, only then did she apologise. Her apology can therefore not be accepted as sincere. Her insults are devoid of all truth and are an insult to the Calvinist religion and to Afrikaner families.
I am an Afrikaner who was brought up in the Calvinist religion. I have three children and nine grandchildren. I do not own them and I don't want to kill them. I have loved them from the day they were born. I have been married to the same wife for the past 52 years. I have never owned her and never wanted to kill her. I have only loved her for more than half a century.
Therefore, this Afrikaner rejects the Minister's insult with the contempt that it deserves. [Applause.]
