Mr Speaker, I move without notice:
That the House -
1) welcomes the initiative by Google to celebrate the legacy of as well as to pay tribute to the late and great Makeba on Monday, 4 March 2013, a day that would have been her 81st birthday;
2) recalls that Google celebrated Miriam Makeba's legacy with a doodle/picture depicting the anti-apartheid icon in stylish profile, wearing her traditional clothes, backdropped by the company's logo set against earth tones;
3) further recalls that this initiative provided her an opportunity to be listed amongst world-acclaimed celebrated artists and scientists, including Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, as well as being the first South African to appear on a Google logo;
4) believes that Miriam Makeba really deserves this honour and that it is befitting to remember her as an outstanding contributor to the struggle against apartheid, as well as the promotion of South Africa worldwide; and
5) commends Google for keeping the legacy of the late Mama Africa, Grammy Awards winner and civil rights activist alive.
Agreed to.
