Speaker, yesterday I paid a visit to Wattville Hostel in my constituency in Benoni. The people of Wattville Hostel have been forgotten by the ANC government, and this was evident in their shocking living conditions. There was only one working tap shared by 200 people and only one working toilet shared by 200 people and children. I met a woman with a child who had a rash, the origin of which doctors could not determine. Babies were vomiting and had diarrhoea.
There was only one shower with cold water shared by 200 people as well. [Interjections.] Most units did not have water and electricity. Many units had illegally connected electricity. There was raw sewage flowing on the ground irrespective of R15,7 million spent by December to upgrade the sewerage and storm water systems, another wasteful and fruitless expenditure.
Wattville Hostel is a council-owned human settlement. There is no proper management and control of the hostel premises by the Ekurhuleni Municipality. These occurrences are endemic in ANC government municipalities across South Africa. It is evident that this government is not serious about bringing a better life for all, and this is a violation against human rights of the hostel dwellers. The DA remains the only champion of the poor, delivering quality services where we govern in the city of Cape Town ... [Interjections.] ... Midvaal and all other DA- governed municipalities. I thank you, Speaker. [Applause.]
