Hon Speaker, the government should ensure that all officials found to be involved in corruption are fired. If they are serious about fighting corruption on all fronts and at all levels, more stringent measures should be put in place to deal with and discourage corruption.
The Department of Public Works is one of those departments rigged with graft, price-fixing, wasteful expenditure and illegal awarding of tenders, and renovating Ministers' homes and even the President's home, Nkandla. These are some of the issues that the department is grappling with. The Minister of Public Works should not only fire corrupt officials in his department, but also have them arrested and jailed. This should send a clear message that the department truly wants to clean up its act.
The national departments' officials who encourage and facilitate corruption are stealing from the public. Their accomplices who run companies that benefit from fraudulently acquired tenders should be exposed and banned from dealing with government departments. Their management should also face jail time.
Government should take action on corruption. Seemingly, government always pays us lip service - speeches filled with meaningless words - while people suffer because of the actions of the individuals who see themselves as the untouchables and as being above the law. We need to see more action and hear no more about promises of action. Thank you.
