NATIONAL COUNCIL OF PROVINCES
QUESTION FOR WRITTEN REPLY
35. Mr M W Makhubela (COPE-Limpopo) to ask the Minister of Defence and
Military Veterans:
(1) Whether her statement regarding the discipline and the worrying signs
of sickness, unprofessionalism, corruption and other ills is an
admission that (a) she inherited the SA National Defence Force with a
declining professionalism and (b) there is a lack of an ability to
develop a professional SANDF during her tenure; if not, what is the
position in this regard, if so, at what point did she come to the
conviction of her observations;
(2) whether she intends taking any actions in this regard given the
remaining duration of her tenure; if not, why not; if so, (a) what
actions and (b) what are the further relevant details? CW75E
REPLY
1) & (2)
The issue of discipline is a matter that we are paying serious
attention to as it impacts on the ability of the South African
National Defence (SANDF) to execute its core mandate. The building of
a well-disciplined, organised, highly skilled and professional force
is at the heart of the Defence Review of 2014, and its implementation
will address most of the ills highlighted in the statement referred to
by the Honourable member.
