NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
FOR WRITTEN REPLY
QUESTION NO. 1338
DATE OF PUBLICATION IN INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER: 21 April 2011
(INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO. 12)
Ms E More (DA) to ask the Minister of Health:
Whether, with regard to his reply to question 837 on 5 May 2010, any
progress has been made in updating the cancer register; if not, what is the
basis upon which his department made a finding of an escalation of the
prevalence of cancer; if so, (a) when will the revised cancer register be
made public and (b) what are the further relevant details?
NW1484E
REPLY:
a) The report for 2002 is already a public document.
b) The National Cancer Registry Report for 2002 was presented to the
Parliamentary Health Portfolio Committee meeting in November 2010 and
is available to the public on request to the National Cancer Registry.
The 2003 to 2005 cancer incidence data is being coded currently and
the report will be ready by mid 2012. There is no prevalence data on
cancer as the National Cancer Registry provides incidence data, i.e
information on newly diagnosed cancers and not on old and new cancers
that would be needed for prevalence. The past reports are also
available on the following website address:
www.nioh.ac.za/?page=cancer_statistics&id=163.
