Ms B P Mabe (ANC-Gauteng) to ask the Minister of Health:
(1) In terms of the District Health Information System, what statistics
are (a) being collected to monitor the number of children, women and
persons with disabilities who receive health care treatment as a
result of violence and abuse and (b) available for (i) mortality and
(ii) morbidity in this regard;
(2) how many health care professionals have (a) reported incidents of
domestic violence in the 2008-09 financial year and (b) taken out
protection orders on behalf of their patients during the said period?

REPLY:
1) (a) Statistics on the number of children, women and persons
with disabilities who receive health care treatment as a result
of violence and abuse are not collected by the District Health
Information System.
(b) (i) Statistics for mortality resulting from violence and abuse
is captured by the Department of Home Affairs through death
certificates and reported as part of non-natural deaths in
relevant reports by Statistics South Africa, notably
âMortality and causes of death in South Africa: Finding
from death notificationâ.
In addition, violence-related deaths are captured through
the National Injury Mortality Surveillance System (NIMSS)
administered by the Medical Research Council (MRC).
Age and gender information is collected but not on
disability.
(ii) As in (a) above.
2) The Department of Health does not keep information on how many health
care professionals have reported domestic violence or taken out
protection oders on behalf of their patients.
