QUESTION NO. 567
DATE OF PUBLICATION IN INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER: 26 October 2012
(INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO. 33)
Mr V M Manzini (DA-Mpumalanga) to ask the Minister of Health:
How does his departmentâs current statistics on HIV/Aids (a) infection and
(b) total prevalence rates compare to that of the World Health
Organisation?
CW777E
REPLY:
a) Since 2001 the World Health Organisation (WHO) UNAIDS Reference Group
has used the Department of Health National Antenatal Sentinel data to
feed into the WHO/UNAIDS Spectrum and EPP Model to project the number
of people infected with HIV in the general South African population.
The total number of people infected with HIV was estimated at
5Â 575Â 096 in 2010.
b) The national HIV prevalence estimate among antenatal women in 2010 was
30.2% (95%CI of 29.39% - 30.9%) and the national HIV prevalence in the
general population was 17.9%. The WHO/UNAIDS Biostastician is part of
the Department of Healthâs HIV Antenatal Sentinel Survey data analysis
team and therefore there are no differences in figures published.
