NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
FOR WRITTEN REPLY
QUESTION NO. 982
DATE OF PUBLICATION IN INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER: 20 MARCH 2015
(INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO. 08)
Ms V van Dyk (DA) to ask the Minister of Health:
What medical services does his department offer to the community of
Kleinzee?
NW1142E
REPLY:
The Department of Health is providing the residents of Kleinzee with the
following services:
⢠TB treatment;
⢠HIV/AIDS treatment;
⢠Immunisations; and
⢠Family planning.
Sister Cloete who is employed by the Mine is rendering a service to the
residents from the Kleinzee Hospital and all patients/clients who do not
have medical aids or cannot afford to pay are referred to the clinic in
Komaggas which is about 60 kilometres away and are transported by the
Department of Health emergency services.
The Department has no record of any Government Hospitals that have closed
in Namaqualand nor in Kleinzee. The only Hospital in Namakwa or in Kleinzee
that closed in the past 5 years is the Private Hospital which is still
owned by De Beers Consolidated Mines. In this regard there is an engagement
process for the facility to be donated to the Northern Cape Department of
Health.
The facility was closed due to De Beers scaling down their operations and
moving their staff to other business units across South Africa and Southern
Africa.
END.
