2954. Dr P J Groenewald (FF Plus) to ask the Minister of Defence and
Military Veterans:
(1) Whether the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) still has any R1
assault rifles (details furnished) in its possession; if so, (a)
how many and (b) what are they used for;
(2) whether the SANDF is planning on disposing of them; if not, why
not; if so, (a) when and (b) in what way;
(3) whether she will make a statement on the matter?

REPLY
1) (a) Yes the South African National Defence Force still has 4575
R1 assault rifles in its possession.
(b) They are no longer used for operational purposes, some are
categorised as heritage assets and others are kept in military
museums .
2) Yes, a specified number will be disposed of in (a) 2014 (b)
Firearms are disposed of according the Firearms Control Act, 60,
of 2000, in conjunction with the South African Police Services.
