QUESTION 293
DATE OF PUBLICATION OF INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER: 08/06/2012
(INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER 16 OF 2012)
Mr S H Plaatjie (COPE-NW) to ask the Minister of Higher Education and
Training:
What is the total number of learners with Mathematics Literacy who have
been enrolled at universities to study (a) engineering, (b) medicine, (c)
architecture, (d) finance, (e) town planning and (f) actuarial studies in
the past ten years?
CW392E
REPLY:
My Department does not collect data related to matric results linked to
enrolment into specific fields of study. Be that as it may, the first
cohort of matriculants with Mathematics Literacy came out of the system in
2008 and therefore no data exists to cover the past ten years.
A pass in Mathematics Literacy is not intended for students intending to
register for high level professional qualifications such as Engineering,
Medicine, Architecture, Finance, Town Planning and Actuarial Studies.
Students entering these fields require an excellent pass in pure
Mathematics. Mathematics Literacy enable students to enter into programmes
where some form of basic understanding of numeracy, statistics and some
applied maths is required such as Psychology, Social Work etc.
