Mr M J R de Villiers (DA-WC) to ask the Minister of Higher Education and
Training:
(1) Whether all universities have student recreational facilities; if not,
which universities do not have such facilities; if so, what facilities;
(2) Whether students make use of these facilities; if not, why not; if so,
for what purposes;
(3) Whether universities use the recreational facilities for other
purposes; if not, what is the position in this regard; if so, (a) which
universities and (b) for what purposes;
(4) Whether any programmes are in place to address the studentsâ lack of
interest in using recreational facilities; if not, why not; if so, (a) what
programmes and (b) what are the further relevant details?

REPLY:
My department does not keep a database of recreational facilities at the 23
Universities, nor does it monitor the use of such facilities. In order to
answer this question all universities were requested to provide a report.
14 universities responded and their reports are attached as an annexure to
this reply.
(1) Yes, almost all 23 universities have student recreational facilities
and students use these for various activities that they were established
for. The attachment reflects current facilities at universities who have
submitted information.
(2) Yes, students make use of these facilities. Refer to the attached
responses from various universities on the usage of these facilities.
(3) Some of the facilities double-up as exam and lecture venues etc,
however a clear indication on how these are utilised, is reflected in the
responses (attached) from various institutions that responded to the
questions.
(4) Yes, programmes are in place to address studentsâ lack of interest in
using these recreational facilities. For (a) and (b), refer to the attached
responses from various universities that responded to the call for
information.
